The wreck of a Byzantine ship has been found on the sea bed at a depth of 3 metres, buried by about 2 metres of sand, off Ragusa, sources said Friday.

The wreck is now being examined by the University of Udine's Kaukana Project, which combines research activities with the training of students of underwater archaeology.

The project is directed by Massimo Capulli, professor of underwater and naval archaeology at the Department of Humanities and Cultural Heritage Studies (Dium) at the University of Udine, and by Sebastiano Tusa, of the Soprintendenza del mare della Regione Sicilia, with the support of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology of the Texas A&M University College Station.

In order to study and document the wreck, a transverse trench along the ship's axis had to be built. The underwater archaeological investigation, also for the purpose of training, involved excavation by means of a water dredger, the installation of a metal casing (designed and built ad hoc to contain the slippage in a sand trench) and the unearthing of a portion of the wreck four metres long and two metres wide. This allowed direct measurements and 3D scans to be taken, as well as samples for radiometric dating.

All the activities were carried out with the technical support of the Ibleo Blue Diving Centre. The data collected will now be processed by the Aquatic Archaeology Laboratory of the Department of Humanities and Cultural Heritage.
